Mykhaylo Kalika takes over lead in qualifying at Russian Open in Moscow

    Ukrainian rolls a 1394 series Thursday morning to lead a field of 106 players by 64 pins; cut for 32nd place is currently 1203

    2012BWCMykhayloKalika.jpgUkrainian national team member Mykhaylo Kalika (pictured) posted a 1394 series, an average of 232.33, in Thursday morning's squad 5 en route to take a dominating 64-pin lead in the qualifying of the RedExpress Russian Open currently underway at Cosmik Belay Dacha in Moscow.

    Kalika came out of the gates quickly with back-to-back to 250s (258 & 257), slowed down the next two (202 & 158) but finished strong with 253 and 266 to lead the field of 106 players from five countries, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Serbia, Ukraine and Russia.

    Squad 1 leader Maksim Okorokov of Russia slipped one spot to second place with 1330. His compatriots Igor Filipov and Yan Korshak led the third and fourth squad on Wednesday with 1326 and 1321 to sit in third and fourth place, respectively.

    Russians Daria Voronkova and Maria Bulanova were the best of 28 women in the field in fifth and sixth place with 1320 and 1319, respectively, including 48 pins women's handicap.

    With another seven qualifying squads to go, Ksenia Kulikova of Russia holds the 32nd and last spot to advance with 1203 or an average of 200.50 including handicap.

    Qualifying continues Thursday, September 12, with squads 6-8 scheduled to start at 1, 5 and 9 p.m. Moscow Standard Time (CEST +2). 2013EBT12RussianOpenLogo_small.jpg The RedExpress Russian Open is the third of seven EBT "Satellite" tournaments this season and runs from Sept. 10-14 at 30-lane Cosmik Belay Dacha in Moscow, Russia. The Russian Open offers total prize fund of 25.000 Euro with 5.500 Euro going to the winner, 3.800 to the runner-up and 2.500 and 2.000 Euro for the third and fourth place finishers respectively.

    Qualifying (six-game series, unlimited re-entries) runs from Tuesday, Sept. 10 through Friday, Sept. 13 with the last Squad 12 scheduled for 9 p.m. local time (CET +2) and concludes with the Desperado Squad slated for 12.30 a.m. on Saturday morning. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game throughout the entire event, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

    A total of 36 players advance to the finals on Saturday, Sept. 14 including the top 32 players from the qualifying standings and the top 4 from the Desperado Squad. The top 8 qualifiers earn one bye and will be seeded first thru eighth in Round Two.

    The other 28 players bowl four games starting from scratch with the top 8 advancing to the second round seeded 9th through 16th.

    The remaining 16 players determine the champion in single-elimination rounds with the two-game total to determine the winner. The highest seeded player bowls the lowest seeded player, the second-highest seeded player bowls the second-lowest seeded player, etc.

    The field will be trimmed to eight and then four players. The winners of the semifinal matches bowl for the title and the 5.500 top prize, while the losers meet in a roll-off for third and fourth place.

    2013EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2013 European Bowling Tour consists of 19 tournaments in 13 countries including two Platinum, six Gold, four Silver and seven Satellite events.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event earn ranking points based on how they finish. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament such as the RedExpress Russian Open gets 50 ranking points.

    Points are tabulated throughout the season and the top 12 men and the top 12 women qualify for the seventh EBT Masters to be held March 3, 2014 at Dolfijn Bowling in Tilburg, Netherlands immediately following the EBT Hammer Bronzen Schietspoel Tournament 2014.
