Swede beats out Finland's Osku Palermaa for the top spot by 109 pins; third-place Liz Johnson (USA) wins women's ranking in Aalborg

2014EBT04JesperSvensson.jpgJesper Svensson (pictured left) of Sweden averaged 244.1 over 10 games to win his second European Bowling Tour title in the Kegel Aalborg International 2014, which concluded Sunday afternoon at Lovvang Bowling Center in Aalborg, Denmark. He received 5.000 Euro for the victory.

The 19-year-old two-handed lefty, who won his first EBT title in the prestigious Brunswick Ballmaster Open last season, fired a 1516 six-game series (252.67) in the Round of 18, outaveraging his nearest competitor, Daniel Vezis, Latvia (1396) by 20 pins, to take a 120-pin lead into the final four-game Round of 8.

The Swedish national team member beat out four-time EBT point ranking leader Osku Palermaa (right), a two-handed righthander from Finland, for the top spot by 109 pins, 2441 to 2332. Palermaa, who also owns three Professional Bowlers Association titles, is tied with England's Paul Moor for the most wins on the EBT at 13. He earned 3.500 Euro for second place.

2014EBT04LizJohnson2.jpgTeam USA member Liz Johnson (left) of Cheektowaga, N.Y., the first woman to appear in the nationally-televised finals of a PBA Tour event (2005 Banquet Open in Wyoming, Mich., when she finished second to Tommy Jones) and the first woman to win a PBA Regional title (also in 2005 in Rome, N.Y.), finished in third place en route to win the women's ranking in Aalborg.

Johnson, who has won her lone European Bowling Tour title in the 2006 Viernheim Open, leaped four places behind the highest 971 series and 2302 total, , including 8 pins handicap per game. Johnson takes home 2.500 Euro.

The Kegel Aalborg International 2014 was held May 19-25 at 30-lane Lovvang Bowling Center in Aalborg, Denmark. The tournament was the seventh stop of the 2014 European Bowling Tour season and the second of only three EBT "silver" tournaments, the third-highest of four categories.

Players competed for total prize money of 40.000 Euro with 5.000 Euro going to the winner, 3.500 to the runner-up and 2.500 to the third place finisher. Low to cash was 38th place worth 500 Euro.

Qualifying (six games, unlimited re-entries) ran from May 19-24. Women received 8 pins handicap each game (maximum score is 300), a standard on the European Bowling Tour.

Total 38 players - the top 30 players from the overall qualifying standings plus the top two players of Squads 4-5 and the top three players of Squads 1-3 (who were not among the top 30) as well as the top three of the Desperado Squad advanced to the finals on Sunday, May 25.

The top eight qualifiers enjoyed a two-round bye while qualifiers 9-18 get a first-round bye.

The first two rounds of the finals, each consisting of four games scratch, trimmed the field to 28 and then 18 players. Those 18 bowled six games scratch in Round 3 with the top eight advancing to the final Round 4. Round 3 pinfall carried over.

The remaining eight players bowled another four games. The player with the highest 10-game total including handicap was declared the winner.

2014EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2014 European Bowling Tour features 20 tournaments in 14 countries. In its 15th season, the EBT consists of two Platinum, six Gold, three Silver and nine Satellite tournaments. The total prize fund exceeds one million Euro.

The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event receive ranking points. Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 12 men and top 12 women, who will compete in the eighth EBT Masters July 6, 2015 in Asti, Italy.

The European Bowling Tour remains in Denmark for the Odense International
, which got underway today at Odense Bowling Center. The finals of the EBT "Satellite" event will take place on Sunday, June 1.
