Birgit Pöppler, Tom van der Vliet claim the titles in 37th European Champions Cup

    2014ECCBirgitPopplerTomvanderVliet.jpgBirgit Pöppler (left) of Germany and Dutchman Tom van der Vliet (right) remained undefeated in the single-elimination finals in the 37th European Champions Cup to claim the women's and men's titles Saturday at Keiluhollin, Egilsholl bowling center in Reykjavik, Iceland.

    The top eight players, men and women, after the 24-game preliminaries battled it out for the title in best-of-three games format. In each round, the highest seeded player bowled the lowest seeded player, the second-highest bowled the second-lowest player, and so on.

    2014ECCWomenTop4.jpgPöppler, seeded second in the women's finals, ousted No. 7 Reija Lundén of Finland in the quarterfinals, two-games-to-none, and came back from a 0-1 deficit against 8th seeded Tamara Adler of Austria to win the semifinal match, 2-1, including a 224-186 in the decider.

    In the title match against No. 4 Andrea Hansen, Pöppler flew past the Norwegian  190-139 and 266.169 to seal the victory, 2-0. Hansen received the silver medal while Adler and defending champion Sanna Pasanen of Finland (1-2 vs. Hansen) shared the bronze medal. L-R Hansen, Pöppler, Pasanen and Adler.

    2014ECCMenTop4.jpgVan der Vliet, who jumped from 12th to seventh place in the last eight-game block in the preliminaries, rolled a pair of 230s to sideline No. 2 seed, Paul Stott of Ireland, in the Round of 8, 2-0, and went the distance to defeat top-seeded Mads Sandbækken of Norway in the semis, 2-1 including a 190-184 win the deciding third game.

    The Dutchman won the first game of the title match against No. 4 Mattias Wetterberg, 259-236, but the Swede leveled the match with one-pin win in game two (228-227) to force the decider. Van der Vliet won the game and the match, 213-200, to earn the title.

    Wetterberg got the silver medal while Sandbækken and Steve Thornton of England (0-2 vs. Wetterberg) shared the bronze medal. L-R Wetterberg, Van der Vliet, Sandbækken and Thornton.

    2014ECCLogo.jpg The 37th European Champions Cup takes place from October 13-18 at 22-lane Keiluhollin, Egilsholl bowling center in Reykjavik, Iceland featuring the champions, men and women, of the European Tenpin Bowling Federation member federations and the 2013 ECC champions.

    32 women including defending champion Sanna Pasanen of Finland and 34 men roll three eight-game blocks of qualifying Wednesday through Friday, on a 40 ft. oil pattern. For more information about Keiluhollin, Egilsholl bowling center read the Lane Map Guide.

    The top eight men and the top eight women after 24 games advance to the single-elimination finals in best-of-three games format on Saturday. The player, who wins all three matches, will be declared the champion.
