Eagle wins third GPBT crown in Michigan Open

    GPBT #11

Royal Scot Lanes in Lansing, Michigan (March 4-6, 2007)

2006GBT08DaleEagle_small.jpg Mark Eestes.jpg The Eagle has landed - again. Dale Eagle (l.) is the winner of the Generations Pro Bowling Tour Michigan Open. After very high scores the entire event, Eagle and Texan Mark Estes (r.) squared off in a hard fought title match that went down to the final frame, with Eagle winning 190-174. Eagle earned $8,000 for his third GPBT title. Estes took home $4,500.

In the championship match Monday evening here at Royal Scot Lanes, Eagle looked strong starting the match, striking on three of his first four shots, but in frames five and six, disaster struck. In frame five, he left the 2-8-10, and then followed with the 4-6-7.

Estes was also struggling with a 7-10 split in the second frame, he was trailing until Eagles two opens gave him an opening. But it wasn't his night. With a chance to take the lead, he left a washout in frame six, and Eagle then doubled to regain command.

Even then, it was not over. When Eagle left a 7-10 in the ninth, he had to strike out to force Estes to double Estes, playing the far outside line, tossed the ball wide in the tenth for a six count, and was denied his first GPBT win.

"The title pair played different for me than they did all week," said Eagle. "The ball was sliding on the right lane, and hooking on the left. I moved right, and it got tighter, and I left the 7-10. I just had too much speed on that shot. I just kept moving, and thank God I won."

"I thought the lanes were pretty nice," said Estes. "I had a good shot off the gutter, but I just threw a couple of terrible shots like the one in the tenth when I still had a chance to win."

By becoming the GPBT's first three-time titlist, Eagle may now be the favorite to become the first GPBT Bowler of the Year. He now trails David Ozio on the money list by less than $3,000. He has $63,800 to Ozio's $66,300.

In prior matches, Estes defeated three GPBT champions to advance. He beat Dave Ferraro 247-227, Mark Roth 202-181, and Ozio in a thrilling semi-final 275-263.

In the Classic Division, Roy Buckley won the first two matches. He beat Matt Buxton 207-190 and Ron Winger 245-204, before losing to Eagle 257-212.

The GPBT now moves to Fort Wayne, Indiana March 9-12 for the Indiana Open, hosted by Georgetown Lanes. Five events remain in the inaugural GPBT season.

"I started out bad," said Ozio, "and then I adjusted my speed and averaged 260 the last three games. Speed is the key for me."

Winger had a very hot hand to start round three, rolling games of 290, 264, 257, and 279. "It was like the first round for me," said Winger. "Scores were high, so I just stroked the ball."

Ozio on a roll in GPBT Michigan Open; Winger takes lead in Classic Division

2006GBT01DavidOzio2_small.jpg David Ozio is back to his dominating role in the Generations Pro Bowling Tour Michigan Open. After rolling a big 1965 8-game series to lead all players in round one, he topped his own mark by following up with a 1971 in round two. Ozio, the GPBT's No. 1 player, is averaging 246.00 for the first 16 games at Royal Scot Lanes.

"It was nothing different today, said Ozio. "It's just playing with speed. It's not a side-to-side move; it's moving the breakpoint up and back to get good carry." My repetition of shots has been very good here. I just hope it holds up in the match play."

Ron_Winger_2557.jpg Ron Winger took the Classic Division lead from first round leader Dale Eagle, who dropped to fourth place after round two.

"I think the lanes were a little tougher for everyone today, said Winger. I just kept grinding it out, and staying in the pocket. I changed balls twice today. I started with my Brunswick Absolute, and after three or four games, I went to the Lane 1 Buzzsaw, and then back to the Absolute the last couple of games."

GBT champions Steve Ferraro and Mark Roth are in second and third in the senior group, and Roy Buckley and Bill Keenan hold those positions in the Classic group.

After 16 games of qualifying, the field was cut to the top 22 players for round robin match play on Monday. 12 bowlers will represent the Senior Division (50-59) and 10 players will be in the Classic Division (60+).

Match play begins at 9:00 am Monday, with the Senior division bowling 12 games, and the Classic division rolling 10 games. After the round robin, the top four bowlers will face off in a stepladder finals in each division.

Each division champion will earn $4,500, and they will bowl a championship match for an additional $3,500 giving the event champion a total of $8000.

Ozio and Eagle lead after Day One in GPBT Michigan Open

2006GBT02DaleEagleDavidOzio2.jpg The Generation Pro Bowling Tour's two top players are on their game again in Lansing, Michigan. After eight games, David Ozio (pictured right) is averaging 245.2 at Royal Scot Lanes to lead the Senior division (50-59) in GPBT's 11th tournament of it's inaugural season.

"It was just a matter of pin carry, said the 'Wizard'. In the Florida events, I bowled well, but I just couldn't carry", he said. Ozio started strong, with games of 258,238, and 288 to anchor his 1965 total.

Dale Eagle (pictured left) rolled a huge 290 game in game six of his eight game block to hel grab the lead in the Classic Division (60+). He finished with a 1934 8-game series and an average of 241.75.

Both of the leaders used the same type ball in round one, and rolled it all eight games. "I used a Storm Agent", said Eagle, and after about three games, I just changed my roll a little bit, and opened up my hand, which changed my speed and angle to the pocket."

With six events remaining on the GBT schedule, Ozio and Eagle are trying to pad their lead on the money list. Ozio has $63,300, and Eagle is second in cash with $55,800 in the first 11 events. Both players have two titles.

Round Two gets underway at 10am Sunday, after which the one third of each division will advance to match play. Players not making the top third but finishing in the top half of their division after the qualifying rounds will earn a bonus check for $250.

The GBT Lansing Open has a field of 65 players, 36 in the Senior Division for players age 50-59, and 29 players are 60 or better.
