Kovalova, Kalika successfully defend titles in Ukrainian Championship

    2011UKRNCDariaKovalova.jpgDaria Kovalova (pictured left) of Kiev and Mikhail Kalika of Odessa won the women's and men's titles in the 2010-11 Ukrainian National Championships. It was the fifth career national title and the third in a row for Kalika, while 16-year old two-time European Youth Champion Kovalova won her second adult title.

    The 2010-2011 Championship consisted of ten events which were held from Sept. 2010 through June 2011. Players received ranking points for their position in each event. The champions were determined based on the best eight results.

    Both champions finished the tournament series in style as they both reached the championship match of the final event at "Terminal" club in Brovary near Kiev on June 8.

    Mikhail Kalika fell in the men's title match to brother Oleksandr Kalika, 223-219, but had already secured his third consecutive national title when Oleksandr Kondratyev of Kiev missed the top 8 finals in 10th place.

    2011UKRNCMikhailKalika.jpgKalika (pictured right) received 69 points for his second-place finish to claim the title with 545 ranking point total. Kondratyev had to settle for the silver medal with 531 points after receiving 58 points for 10th place. Bronze went to Evgeniy Karmazin of Kharkov, who used a fourth-place finish in the last event, worth 65 points, to chalk up 502 total points.

    Kovalova started the final event with a 15 point advantage over second-place Natalia Scherbinina of Cherkassy. Both finished 1, 2 after 12 games preliminaries when the field was cut to the top 8 for the single-elimination finals.

    By advancing to the top 8 Kovalova sealed her victory in the women's national championships. Both players won their quarterfinal and semifinal matches to clash in the title match. Kovalova capped off the season with a 233-222 win.

    She earned 29 points to finish atop the women's leaderboard with 212 ranking point total. Scherbinina, who received 27 points was 17 points behind in second place with 195. Oleksandra Yakunina of Kharkov was third with 188.

    Kovalova and Kalika will represent the Ukraine in the 47th QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup to be held Nov. 30 - Dec. 7, 2011 at Northcliff Bowling Center in Johannesburg, South Africa. Runner-ups Scherbinina and Kondratyev will represent their country at the 2011 European Champions Cup Aug. at Lahti Bowl, in Lahti, Finland.
