Senior U.S. Open winner leads qualifying for fourth time this season

2012PBASTourRotYAmletoMonacelli.jpgFor the fourth time this season Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli (pictured left) earned top qualifier honors for a PBA50 Tour tournament by leading a field of 24 players advancing to match play in the PBA50 Northern California Classic presented by Track Tuesday at Harvest Park Bowl.

Monacelli, who successfully defended his Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by Storm title June 7 for his second career PBA50 Tour win, led qualifying with a 3,942 16-game pinfall total (246.3 average). He had games of 256, 269, 277, 247, 223, 226, 225 and 237 in Tuesday's round.

"Qualifying is about getting as many pins as you can and in match play you're trying to win as many matches as you can," said the 19-time PBA Tour winner. "But where it is similar is you try to avoid watching the other guy and just concentrate on your game", Monacelli said..

"In both cases you're really bowling against the lanes and the conditions. If I make a mistake, I accept it and learn from it, and then move on. As an example, in the Senior U.S. Open I did a much better job of that than I did in the Senior Masters."

Monacelli, who also has two runner-up finishes this season, finished 21st in the USBC Senior Masters after winning the Senior U.S. Open.

2012PBASTourPotYWalterRayWilliams.jpg2011PBASRonWinger.jpgCompeting in his fifth PBA50 Tour tournament, amateur Pete Thomas of Oklahoma City finished qualifying in second with a 3,936 pinfall just six pins behind Monacelli.

Rounding out the top five were first round leader Ron Winger (left), Las Vegas, 3,869; reigning PBA50 Player of the Year Walter Ray Williams Jr. (right), Ocala, Fla., 3,865, and Bob Learn Jr., Erie, Pa., 3,830, who won the season opening PBA50 Pasco County Suncoast Open.

After seven tournaments this season there have been seven different winners. In addition to Monacelli, Williams and Learn, 16th place Lennie Boresch Jr., Kenosha, Wis., 3,675, will also be trying to become the season's first two-time winner.

Northern California Classic Match play begins Wednesday morning. Round of 8 and championship rounds scheduled for 5:30 p.m. PT.
