Pro-am style event benefits Special Olympics

2013WCStrikeGoldSpecialAthletesPRCMEX.jpgBowling fans in Nevada had an opportunity Friday at Sunset Station's Strike Zone bowling center in Henderson, Nev., to bowl with the best bowlers in the world in the Strike Gold Celebrity Challenge, a World Tenpin Bowling Association charity event.

The event helped usher in the WTBA World Championships and benefitted Special Olympics. The pro-am style event, which featured entertaining impersonators, was open to the public and had two squads with more than one hundred of Special Olympics athletes.

2013WCStrikeGoldWilliamsDornbergerElvis.jpgWTBA President and CEO Kevin Dornberger was very satisfied with the number of participants. "The outcome is terrific. We had over 100 special athletes and 120 WTBA athletes volunteered, one-fourth of the field," Mr. Dornberger said.

"This was good opportunity for our athletes to see that bowling isn't easy for special athletes, but they have a joy for the game."

The photo shows Mr. Dornberger (center) with Jerome "Junk Yard Dog" Williams (left), who played for Detroit, Toronto, Chicago and New York during his 10-year career in the National Basketball Association, and an Elvis impersonator.

The three-game event featured automatic strikes in the third, sixth and ninth frames and offers two entry options. Bowling fans could either sign up for a Striking Gold package, which included a Storm or Brunswick bowling ball, a current copy of Bowlers Journal International, a one-year subscription to Bowlers Journal International, lunch and refreshments, and a social and autograph opportunity with elite world athletes, or the Platinum package, which included all items except the bowling ball.

Sponsors of these events included Kegel, Storm, Brunswick, Rolltech, Bowlers Journal International, the United States Bowling Congress, the City of Henderson, Station Casinos, Sunset Station and Red Rock Casino Resort.
