Van der Tol, Koh take the lead as Women Squad A has finished qualifying in 43rd QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup

    2007BWCGhislainevanderTol.jpg 2007BWCSharonKoh.jpg Two lefties, Ghislaine van der Tol (left), Netherlands, and Sharon Koh (right), Malaysia, took the lead in the women's division in the 43rd QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup at Continent Bowling Center in St. Petersburg, Russia, after Squad A has finished their 24-game qualifying.

    The Dutch rolled a 1402 series on Wednesday including three 250-plus games to finish with 5179 24-game total and an average of 215.79. It was the second 1400-series by a women in this year's World Cup and mere one pin shy of the 1403 high which Aumi Guerra, Dominican Republic, has posted on Tuesday.

    Koh, who took the lead after in game 21 after starting with a 726 three game series today, ended up in second place with 5168 (215.33).

    2007BWCSueAbela6_small.jpg Sue Abela (left), Malta, who led the 73-player field after 18 games, slipped to third with 5094. Abela managed only two games over 200 today which resulted in a sub-par 1171 series. She had only three games under 200 in the first 18 games.

    2007BWCPirittaKantola_small.jpgPiritta Kantola (right), Finland rolled back-to-back 230s in her 1270 series to take the fourth place with 5030 and to maintain a slim 2-pin lead over 1999 World Masters champion Ann-Maree Putney.

    Sofia Granda, Guatemala, checked in with 5000, good for sixth place at the moment.

    (right), Austria, moved to seventh with 4986 behind a 1309 series, just one pin ahead of 8th-placed Sasha Luciano, Puerto Rico, 4985.

    The players from Squad B will start bowling at noon. The top 24 after qualifying will advance to the next round.

    The top 24 men and the top 24 women after 24 games of qualifying will bowl eight games on Thursday (women at 8 a.m., men at 11.30 a.m.) with the qualifying pinfall being carried forward. The top 8 men and the top 8 women after 32 games will advance to round robin match play on Friday.

    Following 8 games of head-to-head competition (30 pins bonus for each win, 15 pins for a tie), the top three men and the top three women will advance to the TV stepladder finals in best of three format on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. with the women with the men to follow at 2 p.m. No. 3 meets No. in the semi-final, the winner will take on the No. 1 seed for the title.
