Ljung cracks Singles top 4 in Squad 4 at Men's World Championships

    2007BWCPeterLjung.jpg Peter Ljung (left) from Sweden finished his six-game series on the tough long-oil pattern with two big games (224, 237) en route to lead Squad 4 and to jump into fourth place overall in the Singles event at the Men's World Championships in Thailand. The lefty topped the previous fourth seed, Shu Liang-Chen, Chinese Taipei (1283) by 12 pins with 1295 pinfall total and an average of 215.83.

    2008MWCKaiGunther.jpg The top 3 - Kai Günther (right), Germany (1317), 44-time PBA champion Walter Ray Williams Jr., United States (1316) and Francois Sacco, France (1310) - remained unchallenged.

    Tanner Israel from Israel closed out his set on Friday morning with a huge 257 but fell four pins short of the top 4 to sit in fifth place with 1291. Brian Farrugia, Malta, who led Squad 4 after 5 games finished with 213 to land in sixth with 1289. Also ahead of Liang-Chen was Magnus Magnusson, Iceland, who had a 256 and 244 in game 4 and 6 to move in 7th with 1284 total.

    The top 4 have to wait out the final preliminary squad at 1.30 p.m. to see if their scores remain in the top four to qualify for the event semifinals later this evening.
