Thomas Larsen claims March Bowler of the Month

Thomas Larsen (pictured) of Denmark has been chosen as the March 2014 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Larsen defeated Dom Barrett, England, 208-205, to win the World Bowling Tour's 11th Kuwait International Open for his second WBT/PBA title. He won his first WBT/PBA title in the 1st Abu Dhabi WBT in December 2013. His other top finishes were in the 2012 PBA WSOB V, a 16th place finish in the PBA Scorpion Championship and a 24th place finish in the PBA World Championship.

Hero Noda named 2014 Luby Hall of Fame recipient by International Bowling Media Association

2014LubyHallofFameAwardHeroNoda_small.jpg The International Bowling Media Association (IBMA) announced Hero Noda, Ibaraki, Japan, as their 2014 recipient of the Luby Hall of Fame Award. A proprietor himself, Mr. Noda is best known as a "volunteer fixture" at International Bowl Expo and the mid-winter Bowling Summit where he takes thousands of photographs of the events as well as of many international tournaments. He will be recognized during the special awards luncheon at International Bowl Expo, Tuesday, June 24, at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando, Florida.

IBMA to honor Lee Evans with Alberta E. Crowe Meritorious Service Award

The man whose dream over 50 years ago has resulted in a tournament involving many nations that has lasted for over 50 years is the recipient of this year's International Bowling Media Association of America Alberta E. Crowe Meritorious Service Award. Lee Evans, the late non-bowling pioneer, dreamer, and risk-taker who founded the Tournament of The Americas, is being honored for his outstanding long-term accomplishments in and for the sport of bowling.

Jason Belmonte repeats as February Bowler of the Month

2014PBA02JasonBelmonte4_small.jpgJason Belmonte, Orange, New South Wales, Australia, has been unanimously chosen as the February 2014 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Belmonte defeated E.J. Tackett, Huntington, Indiana, 221-177, for the USBC Masters title, for his ninth career and third major PBA title. He is only the third bowler to repeat as Masters champion; the first almost nearly a half-century. Belmonte joins USBC Hall of Famers Dick Hoover and Billy Welu as the only back-to-back winners of the USBC Masters.

Augie Karcher, IBMA Hall of Fame member, dead at 91

20140221IBMAAugieKarcher_small.jpgAugust "Augie" W. Karcher, a bowling media fixture for years, passed away Feb. 21, 2014 in Winona, Iowa. He was 91. Karcher was born in Germany in 1923 and emigrated to the U.S. a year later with his mother and two sisters to join his father in Sioux City, Iowa. He attended the University of Iowa and in 1943 began his newspaper career at the Toledo Chronicle. He earned numerous awards for writing and service to the sport of bowling including the Mort Luby Distinguished Service Award from the Bowling Writers Association of America.

Steve James named 2014 IBMA Mike Hennessy Award of Merit recipient

The International Bowling Media Association has announced that Steve James has been named as the IBMA Mike Hennessy Award of Merit recipient for 2014. James, of Fox Point, Wis., devoted his career to promoting the sport and those who competed in it through several positions in the bowling industry over a career that spanned nearly four decades, highlighted by induction to the ABC Hall of Fame in 2005. In the international arena, James served as Deputy Secretary General of the Federation Internationale des Quilleurs (FIQ)

Jason Belmonte named Kegel January Bowler of the Month by IBMA

2014PBA01JasonBelmonte_small.jpgJason Belmonte (pictured) of Orange, New South Wales, Australia, has been chosen as the January 2014 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. He defeated Wes Malott, Pflugerville, Texas, 219-218 in the championship match, to win the Barbasol PBA Tournament of Champions for his eighth career and second major PBA title. Belmonte continues a winning streak of the IBMA Kegel Bowler of the Month honor by capturing the award in each of the last four years.

Lucy Sandelin, Pete Weber named IBMA Senior Bowlers of the Year

201213PBA16PeteWeber2_small.jpgInternational Bowling Media Association (IBMA) President Joan Romeo has announced Lucy Sandelin (l.), Tampa, Fla., and Pete Weber (r.), St. Ann, Mo., have been elected Senior Bowlers of the Year for 2013 by a vote of members of the bowling media group. Sandelin garnered 210 points in a 5-3-1 voting system with 5 points being given for a first place vote. Weber won Male Senior Bowler of the Year by one point (175-174) over Walter Ray Williams Jr.

Dominic Barrett repeats as December Bowler of the Month

Dom Barrett of Colchester, Essex, England, has been chosen as the December 2013 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Barrett (pictured) captured the 13th Qatar Bowling Open by defeating Mattias Olsson, Sweden, 515-467, in a two-game total pins match. This was Barrett's eighth European Bowling Tour and third PBA title. The British bowler continued his hot streak from November, when he captured his first major, the PBA World Championship.

Dominic Barrett dominates as November Bowler of the Month

201213PBA22DominicBarrett_small.jpg Dom Barrett (pictured), Colchester, Essex, England, has been chosen as the November 2013 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Barrett captured the PBA World Championship, the major title included in the PBA World Series of Bowling V, defeating Sean Rash, Montgomery, Illinois, in the title match, 238-235. It is his second PBA title, after winning the PBA Viper Championship at last year's PBA World Series of Bowling.

Mika Koivuniemi finishes as October Bowler of the Month

201213PBAMikaKoivuniemi_small.jpg Mika Koivuniemi, Hartland, Michigan, has been chosen as the October 2013 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. The Finnish native capped off the month by capturing the World Bowling Tour 11th Columbia 300 Vienna Open in Vienna, Austria, by defeating fellow Finn Pasi Uotila, 258-237. It is Koivuniemi's third PBA title this year and twelfth career crown. In addition, Koivuniemi finished second in the WBT Thailand Open.

Queen Diana Zavjalova reigns as September IBMA Bowler of the Month

Diana Zavjalova (pictured), Latvia, has been named the September 2013 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Zavjalova became the first European woman to win the 2013 USBC Queens Tournament defeating former USBC Queens champion Leanne Hulsenberg, North Ogden, Utah, 190-160. In her first time bowling the tournament, Zavjalova went undefeated in double-elimination match play to earn the top seed for the television finals.

Kelly Kulick, Osku Palermaa elected to World Bowling Writers Hall of Fame

2013WCOskuPalermaa_small.jpg 2013WCKellyKulick_small.jpgOsku Palermaa (l.) of Finland and American Kelly Kulick (r.) have been named as the recipients of the 2013 World Bowling Writers International Bowling Hall of Fame awards. The WBW merged with the BWAA in 2012 to form the International Bowling Media Association (IBMA). The WBW Hall of Fame award was retained by IBMA. Both will be presented with their awards during the World Series of Bowling in October at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas.

Kerry Painter named August IBMA Bowler of the Month

The first of Painter's two wins was the PBA50 Senior/Super Senior Doubles Classic, with senior partner Tom Adcock, defeating John Petraglia and Wayne Webb, 267-187. He followed by winning the inaugural High Roller Super Senior Masters defeating Gary Dickinson, Edmond, Oklahoma and Curtis Dornath, Maricopa, Arizona, in a two-game total pins match, 462-438-392.

Memorial services set for PBA Hall of Famer John Jowdy

ImageMemorial services have been set for PBA Hall of Famer John Jowdy (pictured), who passed away at age 93 on Aug. 1. A mass will be held at noon on Saturday, Aug. 17, at San Fransesco Di Paola Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas. John is survived by his wife Brenda and his children John Jowdy Jr., Mary Ann Yamin, Steve Harris, Lori Millard and Andrew Harris; grandchildren Gina, Lisa, Stephen, Tera, Kelly, Ryan, Austin, Landon, Rivers and Robby and great grandchildren Pia, Addy, Hudson, Nicole and Ali.

Liz Johnson historic as July IBMA Bowler of the Month

Liz Johnson (l.) of Cheektowaga, New York, has been named the July 2013 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Johnson defeated Kelly Kulick, Union, New Jersey, for the women's crown of the 2013 Lipton Bowling's U.S. Open, 257-195, and her third career U.S. Open victory. In a first-ever Bowling Battle of the Sexes following championship matches, Johnson defeated men's winner Wes Malott (r.) in a one game roll off, 194-188.

BWAA past president and life member John Jowdy passes away

PBA Hall of Famer and coaching pioneer was 93; led Bowling Writers Association of America in 1996

ImageProfessional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer and pioneer bowling coach John Jowdy (pictured) of El Cajon, Calif., died today of natural causes. He was 93. Jowdy was inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame in 1988 primarily for his coaching contributions but was also a prolific bowling writer and bowling industry advocate. He was president of the Bowling Writers Association of America in 1996 and was later voted a Life Member of the organization. Most recently he was inducted into the Bowling Coaches Hall of Fame in 2010.

Pete Weber masters June IBMA Bowler of the Month

Pete Weber, of St. Ann, Missouri, has been named the June 2013 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Weber (pictured) defeated Lennie Boresch, Jr., Kenosha, Wisconsin, 229-205, capturing the 2013 USBC Senior Masters. Weber continued his outstanding bowling with victories in the PBA Tournament of Champions and the inaugural PBA League title. He was also named the April IBMA Kegel Bowler of the Month.

The award is named after journalist Chuck Pezzano (right), a member of the IBMA, USBC and PBA Halls of Fame.

Lennie Boresch Jr. dominates as May IBMA Bowler of the Month

Lennie Boresch Jr. (pictured left) of Kenosha, Wisconsin, has been chosen as the May 2013 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Boresch capped an outstanding month on the PBA50 Tour by capturing the Miller High Life Classic presented by Columbia 300 closely edging Mike Henry, Brunswick, Ohio, 211-210. This win was the 2012 USBC Hall of Famer's second win on the PBA50 Tour. The other being the 2012 Senior Sun Bowl In the Villages, his very first PBA50 tournament.
