IBMA to honor Gordon Vadakin with Alberta E. Crowe Meritorious Service Award

200910WSUGordonVadakin_small.jpgA man who has achieved success both on and off the lanes but who perhaps is best recognized as one of bowling's top coaches, is the recipient of this year's International Bowling Media Association Alberta E. Crowe Meritorious Service Award. Gordon Vadakin (pictured), who has made his mark in bowling as an athlete, instructor, coach, and even an entertainer of sorts, is being honored for his outstanding long-term accomplishments in and for the sport of bowling. The award will be presented during International Bowl Expo in Las Vegas.

Michael Tang, Daria Kovalova named Collegiate MVPs for 2014-15 Season

201415CollegiateMVPsMichaelTangDariaKovalova_small.jpgSan Jose State sophomore Michael Tang and Wichita State junior Daria Kovalova (pictured, l-r) were named Most Valuable Players for the 2014-15 college bowling season by the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association. Tang and Kovalova were honored Wednesday night with the rest of the All-Americans at the Night of Champions banquet held in conjunction with the 2015 XBowling Intercollegiate Team Championships, which starts Thursday at Northrock Lanes in Wichita, Kan.

Josh Blanchard snares March Bowler of the Month

2015EBT06JoshBlanchard_small.jpgJosh Blanchard of Gilbert, Arizona has been chosen as the March 2015 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. A unanimous choice by committee members, Blanchard won his first two PBA titles in a nine-day span. His first title came in a 248-211 win over Sin Li Jane, Malaysia, for the WBT/EBT 12th Brunswick Euro Challenge. The second win was a 2-1 best-of-three win over reigning PBA Player of the Year Jason Belmonte, Australia, in the PBA XtraFrame Maine Shootout.

IBMA announces sixteen finalists for 2015 College Bowlers of the Year

IBMALogo.jpg The International Bowling Media Association (formerly Bowling Writers Association of America) has announced the sixteen nominees for the 2015 College Bowler of the Year. The committee, comprised of IBMA members who are bowling media and former college coaches, met on April 6, 2015 to determine the top eight male and female players eligible to receive the award. The 2015 winners will be announcedon April 15th.

Jason Belmonte historic as February Bowler of the Month

Belmonte had a month to remember with an unprecedented three-peat win at the 65th USBC Masters (l.), followed up by a back-to-back win at the 50th PBA Tournament of Champions (r.).

Jason Belmonte and Kelly Kulick named 2014 IBMA Bowlers of the Year

Belmonte (l.) was the overwhelming choice of IBMA members, garnering 81% of first place votes on ballots distributed in January. This selection also marks back-to-back IBMA Bowler of the Year titles, as he was also chosen in 2013. In the women's category, it was another 'slim pickins' year for events.

Mike Fagan starts 2015 as January Bowler of the Month

Mike Fagan, Fort Worth, Texas, has been chosen as the January 2015 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Fagan defeated Wes Malott, Pflugerville, Texas, 252-212, for the PBA World Championship, earning his second major PBA title, and fifth overall. Fagan, the No. 2 seed, defeated Williams, 219-206, in the semifinal, setting up the title match with top-seeded Malott. Others obtaining votes this month were Paul Moor, Chris Barnes, Brian Voss and Kameron Doyle.

Tish Johnson, Pete Weber elected IBMA Senior Bowlers of the Year for 2014

2014BPAAWomensAllStarTishJohnson_small.jpg 2014PBAPeteWeber2_small.jpgJoan Romeo, President of the International Bowling Media Association (IBMA), has announced that Tish Johnson (l.) of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Pete Weber (r.) of St. Ann, Mo., have been elected Senior Bowlers of the Year for 2014. Johnson led the female voting with 148 points with Paula Vidad of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., a distant second (59). Weber topped the male ballot with 110 points, followed by Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Oxford, Fla. (76).

Kent marshalled in as December Bowler of the Month

2014IBMABotMMarshallKent_small.jpg Marshall Kent (pictured), Yakima, Washington, has been chosen as the December 2014 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Kent defeated Martin Larsen, Sweden, 257-206, to win the 8th Kingdom International Open, also his first PBA title. Others obtaining votes were three-time World Champion Choi Bokeum, two-time World Champions Kang Heewon and Park Jongwoo, all from Korea, and four-time silver medalist Mike Fagan.

PBA Hall of Fame Charter member Chuck Pezzano dies at age 86

Internationally recognized bowling journalist, historian was one of a kind

20150123ChuckPezzano_small.jpgChuck Pezzano (pictured) of Clifton, N.J., a charter member of the PBA Hall of Fame and widely recognized as the dean of bowling journalists, died Friday, January 23 of cardiac arrest while undergoing a stent procedure at St. Mary's Passaic, N.J. He turned 86 on Jan. 14. Since the formation of the PBA in 1958, no one has contributed more to the organization in so many different ways than Pezzano, a founding member of the organization. He was the first Meritorious Service inductee in the inaugural PBA Hall of Fame class in 1975, among his 12 halls of fames.

Dom Barrett reigns as November 2014 Kegel Bowler of the Month

2014EBT19DominicBarrett2_small.jpgDom Barrett (pictured), Colchester, Essex, England, has been chosen as the November 2014 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Barrett defeated British countryman, Stuart Williams, 395-388, in a two-game total-pins match to successfully defend his championship in the 14th Qatar Open. Barrett's strong November performance included a fourth place finish in the PBA Viper Championship, a sixth place posting in the PBA Chameleon Championship, and a 37th place showing in the PBA Round 1 Japan Cup.

Paul Moor named October IBMA Bowler of the Month

2014EBT16PaulMoor_small.jpg Paul Moor (pictured)of England has been named October 2014 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Moor defeated Tommy Jones, United States, 265-217, for the 12th Columbia 300 Vienna Open in Vienna, Austria. Moor threw eleven strikes in his match with Jones, a third frame split the only blemish. The stepladder finals started with the fourth-seeded Jones ousting fellow American Chris Barnes 255-205, then disposed second-seeded Jonas Jehkinen, Finland, 231-203, to set up the title match with Moor.

Missy Parkin shines as September IBMA Bowler of the Month

2014TeamUSAMissyParkin_small.jpgMissy Parkin (pictured), Laguna Hills, California, has been chosen as the September 2014 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Parkin won four gold medals at the 2014 Pan American Bowling Confederation (PABCON) Women's Championships in Cali, Columbia. Besides leading Team USA in the team event, she and partner Kelly Kulick set a PABCON doubles record, and anchored the trios winning squad, and also captured the All-Events crown.

Osku Palermaa claims August IBMA Bowler of the Month

2014WBTThailandOskuPalermaa_small.jpg Osku Palermaa, Finland, has been chose as the August 2014 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Palermaa downed Ryan Ciminelli, Cheektowaga, New York, for the World Bowling Tour (WBT) Thailand title, 227-213, and 243-224. The win is also his fourth career Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) title and his second PBA International title behind the 2012 Kuwait Open. His PBA National Tour titles are the 2010 PBA Geico Shark Championship and the 2011 PBA World Championship.

All Star Shannon Pluhowsky is July IBMA Bowler of the Month

2014BPAAWomensAllStarShannonPluhowsky2_small.jpgShannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio, has been chosen as the July 2014 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Pluhowsky defeated Diana Zavjavola, Latvia, 225-212, for the Bowling Proprietors Association of America (BPAA) Women's All Star tournament. Zavjavola had a one-pin lead after eight frames until an open frame from not converting a 2-4-8-10 split, giving Pluhowsky a chance to close out the match and the title.

Walter Ray Williams Jr. masters June IBMA Bowler of the Month

2014PBA5005WalterRayWilliams2_small.jpgWalter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Florida has been chosen as the June 2014 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Williams defeated Jack Jurek, Lackawanna, New York, 240-219, for the USBC Senior Masters title, for his first PBA50 major title. Williams also had top ten finishes in the other three PBA50 events in the month, a third place in the PBA50 Grants Pass Open, fifth in the Senior U.S. Open, and eighth in the PBA50 Northern California Classic.

Mark Davis receives John Davis Award for 2014

2014JohnDavisAwardMarkDavis_small.jpg Mark Davis (pictured with Len Nicholson, left), younger brother of the late John Davis, founder of the Kegel Company, has been named the 2014 recipient of the John Davis Award. The surprise presentation was made at International Bowl Expo in Orlando, Fla. The award is presented annually to a deserving person who is actively involved in trying to advance the sport of bowling. A perpetual plaque, bearing each recipient's name, is on permanent display at the Kegel Training Center in Lake Wales, Fla.

Bill O'Neill claims May IBMA Bowler of the Month

2014PBA06BillONeill_small .jpg Bill O'Neill, Langhorne, Pennsylvania, has been chose as the May 2014 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. O'Neill won two events during the PBA Summer Swing, the PBA Badger Open, defeating Brian Valenta, Lockport, Illinois, 243-235. He then won the PBA Oklahoma's Grand Resort King of the Swing, downing Sean Rash, Montgomery, Illinois, 245-181. In addition, O'Neill finished eighth in the PBA Wolf Open, fourth in the PBA Oklahoma Open, and third in the PBA Bear Open.

Norm Duke is royal as April IBMA Bowler of the Month

2014PBANormDuke_small.jpg Norm Duke (pictured) of Clermont, Florida, has been chosen as the April 2014 Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Duke had a solid month on the PBA50 Tour, posting a win at the PBA50 UnitedHealthcare Sun Bowl In The Villages, presented by Radical, and a runner-up finish in the season-opening event, the PBA50 Pasco County Open. In his win, Duke defeated three fellow PBA Hall of Famers, Parker Bohn III, Pete Weber and Tom Baker.

Liz Johnson, Jason Belmonte selected as 2013 IBMA Bowlers of the Year

Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., captured the top spot in the women's voting in large part because of her victory in the U.S. Women's Open. Belmonte, a two-handed thrower from Australia, led the men's voting thanks to winning the USBC Masters.
