Mykhaylo Kalika wins qualifying at RedExpress Russian Open

    Ukrainian leads the top 36 players into the finals on Saturday; no changes atop the leaderboard on Friday; cut for 32nd place is 1240 (206.67 average)

    2012ECCMykhayloKalika.jpgMykhaylo Kalika (pictured left) of Ukraine won the qualifying of the RedExpress Russian Open to lead a field of 36 players into Saturday's finals at Cosmik Belay Dacha in Moscow. Kalika, who won the penultimate qualifying squad 11 on Friday with 1279, led the field of 152 players from eight Eastern European countries since squad 5 with 1394 and an average of 232.33.

    The next six places belonged to Russian bowlers. Mikhail Belenky was second with 1350 and was followed by Squad 1 leader Maksim Okorokov in third place with 1330. Rounding out the top five were Igor Filipov (1326) and Yan Korshak (1321).

    2011EBT15IvanSemenov.jpgDaria Voronkova and Maria Bulanova were the best of 34 women in the field in sixth and seventh place, respectively, with 1320 and 1319 including 48 pins women's handicap.

    Pavel Sobolev of Belarus took the eighth and last spot to earn a first-round bye with 1316 (219.33).

    Ivan Semenov (right), who led squads 9 and 10 on Friday, moved into 11th place with 1301. Viktor Stepanenko, Russia, led the final squad 12 with 1283, good for 14th place overall.

    Nadezhda Korablinova of Russia took the 32nd and last spot to advance with 1240 and an average of 206.67 including handicap.

    The top 32 will be joined in the finals by Russian Mikhail Lukyanov, Alexey Sidorov, Alexander Minenko and Viktor Krasavkin, who led the one-game Desperado Squad.

    2013EBT12RussianOpenLogo_small.jpg The RedExpress Russian Open is the third of seven EBT "Satellite" tournaments this season and runs from Sept. 10-14 at 30-lane Cosmik Belay Dacha in Moscow, Russia. The Russian Open offers total prize fund of 25.000 Euro with 5.500 Euro going to the winner, 3.800 to the runner-up and 2.500 and 2.000 Euro for the third and fourth place finishers respectively.

    Qualifying ran from Tuesday, Sept. 10 through Friday, Sept. 13. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game throughout the entire event, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

    A total of 36 players advanced to the finals on Saturday, Sept. 14 including the top 32 players from the qualifying standings and the top 4 from the Desperado Squad. The top 8 qualifiers earned one bye and will be seeded first thru eighth in Round Two.

    The other 28 players bowl four games starting from scratch with the top 8 advancing to the second round seeded 9th through 16th.

    The remaining 16 players determine the champion in single-elimination rounds with the two-game total to determine the winner. The highest seeded player bowls the lowest seeded player, the second-highest seeded player bowls the second-lowest seeded player, etc.

    The field will be trimmed to eight and then four players. The winners of the semifinal matches bowl for the title and the 5.500 top prize, while the losers meet in a roll-off for third and fourth place.

    2013EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2013 European Bowling Tour consists of 19 tournaments in 13 countries including two Platinum, six Gold, four Silver and seven Satellite events.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event earn ranking points based on how they finish. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament such as the RedExpress Russian Open gets 50 ranking points.

    Points are tabulated throughout the season and the top 12 men and the top 12 women qualify for the seventh EBT Masters to be held March 3, 2014 at Dolfijn Bowling in Tilburg, Netherlands immediately following the EBT Hammer Bronzen Schietspoel Tournament 2014.
