Erland Lund starts Norwegian Open 2014 by Brunswick with a bang

    Norwegian shoots 1463 series (243.83 average) including a 300 game in Squad 2; Tor Inge Jansen also cracks the 1400-bar; early cutoff number for 42nd place is 1121 (186.83 ave.)

    Erland Lund (pictured left) started the European Bowling Tour "satellite" tournament with a bang leading Squad 2 with 1463 including the first 300 game of the event. Lund started with 231 before he achieved perfection in game two. He closed out with 182, 279, 258 and 213, an average of 243.83 for six games to hold a 15-pin lead after four squads.

Frode Jørgen Aaneby (above right), who led the opening squad on Friday with 1382 sits in third place and is followed by another three bowlers of Squad 2, Øyvin Kulseng (left; 4th, 1342), Runar Almestrand (5th, 1323) and Icelander Arnar David Jonsson (right; 6th, 1322).

    Places seven and eight belonged to Squad 4 leader Martin Moen Stikbakke with 1303 and Squad 4 leader Thor Morten Bjørge with 1295. At the end of the qualifying, the top 8 will earn four byes and will bypass the semifinals and Final Round 1-3.

    2013EBT16HeidiThorstensen.jpgHeidi Thorstensen (right) was the best of seven women and the only woman in the top 42 in 23rd place with 1234 including eight pins handicap each game. With 18 qualifying squads to go, Guttorm Bjørøen currently holds the 42nd and last spot to advance with 1121 or an average of 186.83.

    Qualifying continues on Sunday, Oct. 5, with Squads 5, 6 and 7 scheduled to start at 11 a.m., 2.30 and 6 p.m. Central European Summer Time (CEST).

    2014NorwegianOpenLogo_small.jpgThe Norwegian Open 2014 by Brunswick is the 17th stop of the 2014 European Bowling Tour and the seventh out of nine EBT "Satellite" events this season. The tournament will be held from Oct. 3-12 at Veitvet Bowling Center in Oslo.

    The total prize fund is 239.000 Kronor or 29.000 Euro with 40.000 NOK or approx. 4.850 Euro going to the winner. The prize money for the top three women in qualifying is guaranteed (5.000, 3.000 and 2.000 Kronor). Low to cash is 60th place worth 1.000 NOK or 120 Euro.

    Qualifying of the Norwegian Open began Friday, Oct. 3 and runs through Saturday, Oct. 11 with the final Squad 22 scheduled for 5 p.m. local time (CEST). Women receive 8 pins handicap each game, an equality handicap provided to women in every event on the European Bowling Tour.

    Total 60 players will advance to the finals on Saturday (Semifinal Round 1 and 2) and Sunday, Oct. 11 & 12:
    • the top 42 players from the overall qualifying standings
    • two players from a separate leaderboard of Squad 1-7, who are not among the top 42
    • the next four women
    • the next four juniors (must not be born before Sept. 1, 1996)
    • the next four seniors (must be 50 years of age at the first day of the tournament)
    • and two players each from the Turbo 1 and 2 list (highest score in qualifying game 5 and 6, respectively; separate fee necessary).

    The top 8 qualifiers earn four byes and will be seeded in Round 4, places 9-16 go to Round 3, places 17-24 start in Round 2 and places 25-28 begin in Round 1. The other 32 finalists advance to Saturday's Semifinal Round 1 which begins at 9 p.m. CEST.

    The top 24 players after three game scratch advance to the Semifinal Round 2, which gets underway at 10:30 p.m. Those 24 bowl another three games with the pinfall carried over. The top 12 qualify for Final Round 1 starting on Sunday morning at 9 a.m.

    The remaining forty players will determine the champion in five three-game rounds (rounds 1-4 starting from scratch). The field will be trimmed from 40 to 32, 24, 16, and then eight who bowl a final three-game block with the pinfall from Round 4 carried forward.

    The player with the highest six-game total will earn the EBT title, 50 ranking points and the 40.000 NOK top prize.

    2014EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2014 European Bowling Tour features 19 tournaments in 13 countries. In its 15th season, the EBT consists of two Platinum, six Gold, three Silver and eight Satellite tournaments. The total prize fund is almost one million Euro.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event receive ranking points. Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 12 men and top 12 women, who will compete in the eighth EBT Masters July 6, 2015 at Bowling Chamartín in Madrid, Spain, immediately following the III Brunswick Madrid Challenge.
