Dominic Barrett dominates as November Bowler of the Month

201213PBA22DominicBarrett_small.jpg Dom Barrett (pictured), Colchester, Essex, England, has been chosen as the November 2013 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Barrett captured the PBA World Championship, the major title included in the PBA World Series of Bowling V, defeating Sean Rash, Montgomery, Illinois, in the title match, 238-235. It is his second PBA title, after winning the PBA Viper Championship at last year's PBA World Series of Bowling.



Andres Gomez, Rocio Restrepo conclude National Championships with victory in Masters

Gomez sweeps all gold medals in the men's division; Restrepo wins three out of six titles

2013COLNCAndresGomezRocioRestrepo_small.jpgLong-time Colombian national team members Andres Gomez and Rocio Restrepo (l-r) of Bogotá emerged as the Masters champions to conclude the 2013 Colombian National Championships at Alberto Galino Sport Unit Bowling Coliseum in Cali. The Championships drew 89 players from eleven departments, who bowled for medals in Singles, Doubles, Trios, Teams, All-Events and Masters. Gomez swept all gold medals in the men's division, while Restrepo won three out of six titles.



2014 Team Canada roster for international events finalized

Canadian Tenpin Federation High Performance division selects two men and two women to complete the 2014 National Team

CTFLogo2_small.jpgThe Canadian Tenpin Federation High Performance division has made the choices of the two men and women who will complete the rosters of Team Canada for 2014. The top six men and six women from the Canadian National Championships will be joined by Danielle Lemoine of Winnipeg, MB, Miranda Panas of St. Catharines, ON, Francois Lavoie from Quebec City, QC, and Dan MacLelland of Montreal, QC. Tyrel Rose of Montreal, QC, is men's Head Coach while Mike Boroskae of Winnipeg, MB, will coach the women.



Canadian Tenpin Federation creates Youth Scholarship Program

CTFLogo2_small.jpgThe Canadian Tenpin Federation Youth Committee has announced the creation of a CTF Scholarship Program. With approval coming from the National Board of Directors and the CTF Executive, the scholarship program is the first of its kind for the Canadian Tenpin Federation. In the first year, the CTF Scholarship Program is pleased to provide two deserving CTF Youth bowlers - one male and one female - with a $1,000 scholarship each.



Mika Koivuniemi finishes as October Bowler of the Month

201213PBAMikaKoivuniemi_small.jpg Mika Koivuniemi, Hartland, Michigan, has been chosen as the October 2013 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. The Finnish native capped off the month by capturing the World Bowling Tour 11th Columbia 300 Vienna Open in Vienna, Austria, by defeating fellow Finn Pasi Uotila, 258-237. It is Koivuniemi's third PBA title this year and twelfth career crown. In addition, Koivuniemi finished second in the WBT Thailand Open.

Carlos Castro of Mexico and Mariela Alarza of Venezuela (Senior) as well as Ildemaro Ruiz of Venezuela and Lucrecia Lopez Jove of Argentina (Super Senior) concluded the championships with victory in the men's and women's Masters match play competition.

Martin Faba Castro of Costa Rica becomes the new PABCON President

Martin Faba Castro (l.) of Costa Rica has been unanimously elected as the new PABCON president by the delegates from 17 countries. Martin Faba Castro replaces Jose Guandique (r.) of El Salvador, who retires after eight years as president of the WTBA American Zone. Guandique was unanimously appointed PABCON Honorary Life President.

Men and senior men bowled in four-player event (12 games), Doubles (4 games) and Singles (4 games). Women competed in Doubles (12 games) and Singles (8 games). All divisions awarded titles in All-Events and concluded with an "Exhibition Stepladder" final.

Queen Diana Zavjalova reigns as September IBMA Bowler of the Month


Diana Zavjalova (pictured), Latvia, has been named the September 2013 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Zavjalova became the first European woman to win the 2013 USBC Queens Tournament defeating former USBC Queens champion Leanne Hulsenberg, North Ogden, Utah, 190-160. In her first time bowling the tournament, Zavjalova went undefeated in double-elimination match play to earn the top seed for the television finals.



Canadian coaches Boroskae, Rose to receive 2013 Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Award

CTFLogo2_small.jpgThe Canadian Tenpin Federation has announced that Team Canada coaches Michael Boroskae and Tyrel Rose were selected as recipients of the 2013 Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Award for their athletes' medal-winning performances this year. This year's awards ceremonies are being held at Stampede Park in Calgary, Alberta on November 8, 2013 and will be attended by sport leaders and coaches from across the country.

The Keller, Texas, twosome joined forces with family, friends and the North Texas business community Sept. 14 for a highly-successful second edition of their Ballards vs. The Big "C" charity event at AMF Euless. Thanks to participation by nearly 200 people on 48 teams the event raised more than $41,000.



Kelly Kulick, Osku Palermaa elected to World Bowling Writers Hall of Fame

The WBW merged with the BWAA in 2012 to form the International Bowling Media Association (IBMA). The WBW Hall of Fame award was retained by IBMA. Both will be presented with their awards during the World Series of Bowling in October at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas.



Kerry Painter named August IBMA Bowler of the Month

The first of Painter's two wins was the PBA50 Senior/Super Senior Doubles Classic, with senior partner Tom Adcock, defeating John Petraglia and Wayne Webb, 267-187. He followed by winning the inaugural High Roller Super Senior Masters defeating Gary Dickinson, Edmond, Oklahoma and Curtis Dornath, Maricopa, Arizona, in a two-game total pins match, 462-438-392.

In the men's title match between Squad A and B leaders, Azevedo defeated Pedro Lima, 202-188, while Rodrigues topped Elisa Kim, 224-187, to capture the women's stepladder final.

Nathan Bohr wins more than $10,000 in 10th New Mexico Open


The 10th New Mexico Open held last week at Tenpins & More was a record-breaker in many ways, including awarding the winner, Nathan Bohr (pictured), his biggest first place check ever of $10,120. Bohr of Wichita, Kansas said as much after he beat top seed, Geoffrey Young of Denton, Texas, 188-183, in a tense final that produced only eight strikes, ten spares and three open frames (splits). The New Mexico Open drew 213 entries and the main event prize-fund was $ 50,220.



Memorial services set for PBA Hall of Famer John Jowdy

ImageMemorial services have been set for PBA Hall of Famer John Jowdy (pictured), who passed away at age 93 on Aug. 1. A mass will be held at noon on Saturday, Aug. 17, at San Fransesco Di Paola Catholic Church in San Antonio, Texas. John is survived by his wife Brenda and his children John Jowdy Jr., Mary Ann Yamin, Steve Harris, Lori Millard and Andrew Harris; grandchildren Gina, Lisa, Stephen, Tera, Kelly, Ryan, Austin, Landon, Rivers and Robby and great grandchildren Pia, Addy, Hudson, Nicole and Ali.



Liz Johnson historic as July IBMA Bowler of the Month


Liz Johnson (l.) of Cheektowaga, New York, has been named the July 2013 Kegel Bowler of the Month by the International Bowling Media Association. Johnson defeated Kelly Kulick, Union, New Jersey, for the women's crown of the 2013 Lipton Bowling's U.S. Open, 257-195, and her third career U.S. Open victory. In a first-ever Bowling Battle of the Sexes following championship matches, Johnson defeated men's winner Wes Malott (r.) in a one game roll off, 194-188.

USA takes 25 out 30 titles as Tournament of the Americas concludes

2013ToATeamUSA_small.jpgThe United States (pictured) captured four of the five team titles as competition in the 51st Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas in Sunrise, Fla., concluded Saturday. The titles in the team competition completed a highly successful week for the United States team as it won 25 of a possible 30 titles at Strikers Lanes and had the top performer in each of the 10 divisions in All-Events. The ToA is the oldest annual international tournament in the American Zone.

BWAA past president and life member John Jowdy passes away

PBA Hall of Famer and coaching pioneer was 93; led Bowling Writers Association of America in 1996

ImageProfessional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer and pioneer bowling coach John Jowdy (pictured) of El Cajon, Calif., died today of natural causes. He was 93. Jowdy was inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame in 1988 primarily for his coaching contributions but was also a prolific bowling writer and bowling industry advocate. He was president of the Bowling Writers Association of America in 1996 and was later voted a Life Member of the organization. Most recently he was inducted into the Bowling Coaches Hall of Fame in 2010.
