Mexican women, U.S. men take the early lead in Doubles qualifying

    Veronica Berumen & Teresa Piccini average over 200 to lead 22/43 women's doubles; Hugh Miller & Ron Mohr outaverage their nearest competitor by more than 10 pins to set the pace in the men's division

    2013WSrCTeresaPicciniVeronicaBerumen.jpg2013WSrCRonMohrHughMiller.jpgVeronica Berumen & Teresa Piccini (pictured left, r-l) of Mexico and Senior Team USA's Hugh Miller & Ron Mohr (right, r-l) took the early lead in the Doubles competition as 22 of 43 women's teams and 29 of 60 men's teams have completed their six-game qualifying blocks.

    Berumen/Piccini were the lone women's duo in Squad A which averaged over 200 on the 40-feet Athens lane conditioning pattern. The Mexicans finished with 2414 total or an average of 201.17. Piccini had the field-best 1268 series (211.33 average) and Berumen added 1146.

    Second place belonged to Ann-Ki Larsson Carlsson & Susanne Olsson (left, r-l) of Sweden with 2387 (198.92), who maintained a seven-pin lead over Singles world senior champion Lucy Sandelin & Tish Johnson (right, r-l), who finished in third place with 2380 (198.33).

    2013WSrCHeatherRobertsonJillMorris.jpgAustralia's Jill Morris & Heather Robertson (left, r-l) were a distant fourth with 2270 (189.17). Only the top 4 teams at the end of the qualifying will advance to the playoffs later this afternoon.

    Fresh off his runner-up finish in Men's Singles yesterday, two-time PBA50 Player of the Year, Ron Mohr, fired the field-best 1348 series while team mate Hugh Miller, whose resume includes seven PBA Tour titles and three PBA50 Tour wins, added 1284 to outdistance their competitors with 2632 total and an average of 219.33.

    2013WSrCJanNordbergChristerPettersson.jpg2013WSrCEsaSievanenPenttiLaine.jpgAs in the men's and women's Singles finals, USA and Sweden held the top spots in Squad A as Singles bronze medalist Christer Pettersson & Jan Nordberg (left, r-l) landed in second place with 2505 (208.75).

    The Americans outaveraged their rivals from Europe by more than 10 pins. Finland's Pentti Laine & Esa SievÀnen (right, r-l) finished strong with games of 471 and 439 to help grab third place with 2437 (203.08).

    2013WSrCJesusGutierrezVictorMar.jpgJesus Gutierrez & Victor Mar (right, l-r) of Mexico saved the best for last, finishing with 454 to take fourth place with 2423 (201.92). That feat came at the expense of Norway's Tom Nilsen & Per Eivind Fjordheim, who slipped out of the top 4 with 2401 (200.08).

    The top four men's and women's teams have to sit and wait if their scores hold on. The semifinals and finals will start at 5 p.m.

    2013WSrCLogo.jpgThe 1st World Senior Championships runs from Aug. 10 thru 16, 2013. Men and women will compete in separate divisions for medals in five events - Singles, Doubles, Team, All-Events and Masters. All participants must be 50 years of age or above in the year of the championships.

    The 213 players from 33 countries return Tuesday for the Doubles event on the 40-feet Athens lane conditioning pattern.
