10/13/13

Svein Ã…ke Ek (pictured left) of Norway averaged 243 in Final Round 4 en route to lead the top eight players into the final round of the Norwegian Open 2013 by Brunswick. As the top 8 carry over the pins from Round 4 into the last three-game round, finishing in the top 8 wasn't all, but every single pin was important.
Ek, who finished qualifying in second place and tournament leader Brian Valenta (right), United States started the round with 215 apiece. James Gruffman of Sweden, who was atop the leaderboard in four of the previous five rounds including the semifinals, set the early pace with 256.

Ek and Valenta used high scores of 267 and 245 in the second game to move to the top and closed out with 247 and 259 to finish 1, 2 with 729 and 719, respectively.
Finnish two-hander Osku Palermaa (left) had games of 245, 215 and 256 to start the last round from third place with 716.
Gruffman (right) rebounded from a 201 in game #2 with 245 to sit in fourth place with 702.

Daniel Fransson (left) of Sweden was fifth with distant 667, with Norwegian Under-21 Team member Arvid Espen (right) in sixth place on 647 and Jimmy Mortensen (below left) of Denmark in seventh place on 644.
Norwegian international Bjørn Einar Rudshagen (below right) was one of only two players with less than 400 after two games, but closed out with 244 and 641 (213.67) do beat out Icelander Arnar David Jonsson for eighth and last place to advance by one pin.
The top eight carry their pinfall total forward into the final three-game round to determine the champion.

The Norwegian Open 2013 by Brunswick is the 16th stop of the 2013 European Bowling Tour and the fifth out of seven EBT "Satellite" events this season. The tournament will be held from Oct. 4-13, 2013 at 26-lane Veitvet Bowling Center in Oslo, Norway.
As a result of a sponsorship agreement with Brunswick, the NO 2013 has increased the total prize fund to 224.000 NOK (currently 27.625 Euro). The winner will receive 35.000 NOK (4.315 Euro) and the runner-up gets 20.000 NOK (2.465 Euro).
Qualifying ran from Friday, Oct. 4 through Saturday, Oct. 12. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game, a standard on the European Bowling Tour. In a change for 2013 the last qualifying squad on Saturday evening was replaced by two semifinal rounds and the top 60 instead of the top 40 players will cash.
A total of 60 players advanced to the finals on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 12 & 13. The top 8 qualifiers are qualified for Round 4, places 9-16 go to Round 3, places 17-24 start in Round 2 and places 25-28 begin in Round 1. The other 32 finalists advanced to Saturday's Semifinal Round 1 which began at 10 p.m. CEST.
The top 24 players after three game scratch advanced to the Semifinal Round 2 to bowl another three games with the pinfall carried over. The top 12 qualified for Final Round 1 on Sunday morning.
The remaining forty players will determine the champion in five three-game rounds. The field will be trimmed from 40 to 32, 24, 16, and then eight who will bowl a final three-game block with the pinfall from Round 4 carried forward.
The player with the highest six-game total will earn the EBT title, 50 ranking points and the 35.000 NOK top prize.
The 2013 European Bowling Tour consists of 19 stops in 13 countries including two Platinum, six Gold, four Silver and seven Satellite tournaments.
