Haukås moves into 14th place with 1425, Torgersen takes 23rd place with 1402; Mike Fagan (USA) leads the 220-player field with 1481; with two more squads to go the score to make the cut in 42nd place is 1341 (223.50 average)

2014EBT17MikeFagan.jpgMuch like the early bird who catches the worm, the three leaders of the 9 a.m. Squad 20 on Saturday morning, all from Norway, caught berths into the semifinals and finals, respectively, of the Norwegian Open 2014 by Brunswick.

Mike Fagan (pictured left), United States, continued to lead the 220-player field from eight countries with 1481 or an average of 246.83 for six games. The top 8 players after 22 qualifying squads will receive four byes and miss the semifinals and the first three rounds of the finals.

2014EBT17KennethHaukas.jpgKenneth Haukås and Tore Torgersen battled it out for the bragging rights of being the number 1 in Squad 20. With 1222 (Haukås) and 1204 (Torgersen) after five games the duo was far ahead of rest of the field at Veitvet Bowling Center in Oslo.

Haukås (right), who uses a thumbless release (actually he doesn't even have a thumb hole but a balance hole) started his series with 227, 257, 252, 233 and 253. He finished with a low game of 203 to win the squad with 1425, a 237.50 average, to shift from 131st to 14th place. Qualifiers from 9th to 16th place will earn three byes.

Torgersen (left)2014EBT17ToreTorgersen.jpg, who came out of the gates with games of 268, 234, 256, 226 and 220 had four strikes and four splits after eight frames on lanes 21 & 22.

2014EBT17ToreTorgersenScreen2.jpgNeeding three strikes and a seven-count to become the 23rd player to crack the 1400-mark, the former World and European champion delivered three strikes and nine on the fill ball to leap from 56th to 23rd place. Qualifiers from 17th to 24th place will get two byes.

2013EBT16ArvidEspen.jpgThe No. 3 in this squad was Arvid Espen (right), who closed out his series with a big 268 game to jump from 101st to 31st place with 1375, just seven pins off the pace for one bye.

2013EBT16StigRuneBarstad.jpgStig Rune Barstad (left) of Norway, whose score from Squad 19 was corrected from 1281 to 1341 (223.50 average), currently holds the 42nd and final qualifying post.

Qualifying concludes on Saturday, Oct. 11 with Squads 21 & 22 starting at 1 and 5 p.m. Central European Summer Time (CEST).

The top 42 players plus 18 wild cards will advance. Players seeded 29th to 60th after qualifying will bowl in the Semifinals 1 & 2 on Saturday evening at 9 and 10.30 p.m. The finals will be on Sunday starting at 9 a.m.

The top 24 players after three game scratch advance to the Semifinal Round 2, which gets underway at 10:30 p.m. Those 24 bowl another three games with the pinfall carried over. The top 12 qualify for Final Round 1 starting on Sunday morning at 9 a.m.

The remaining forty players will determine the champion in five three-game rounds (rounds 1-4 starting from scratch). The field will be trimmed from 40 to 32, 24, 16, and then eight who bowl a final three-game block with the pinfall from Round 4 carried forward.

The player with the highest six-game total will earn the EBT title, 50 ranking points and the 40.000 NOK top prize.
