ITRC gets cutting-edge technology with Google Glass

20140117RodRossGopgleGlass_small.jpg The International Training and Research Center has always been on the cutting edge of technology and with the introduction of Google Glass that trend has continued. Rod Ross (pictured), director of the ITRC and Team USA head coach, recently received Google Glass, which is a tiny computer mounted onto an eyeglass frame. The wearable device can be used for hands-free video recording, which will help with coaching and training. Team USA member Mike Fagan had the opportunity to test it out.

In conjunction with World Bowling (the World Tenpin Bowling Association), the world governing body for the sport, the ITRC staff will host the educational conference that will be beneficial for all bowling coaches, with an emphasis on team coaching and ball motion. USBC Coaching renames Gold Coach Award for Fred Borden

2013USBGoldAwardFredBorden_small.jpg The award presented to coaches who complete Gold certification through the United States Bowling Congress Coaching Certification and Development has been renamed in honor of USBC Hall of Fame coach Fred Borden (pictured). USBC Gold is the highest level of certification a bowling coach can achieve and coaches will receive the Fred Borden USBC Gold Coach Award upon earning Gold status. Borden served as Team USA coach for a total of 12 years, taking the reins from 1989-1996 and again from 2000-2003.

USBC Gold coach Paeng Nepomuceno holds first coaching seminar in Macau, China

201312PaengMacauSeminar1_small.jpg Four-time Bowling World Cup champion and USBC Gold Level coach Paeng Nepomuceno (pictured with his students) recently concluded an exclusive Level One and Bronze Level coaching seminar in Macau, China. The Macau seminar, which was held at the government-owned state-of-the-art Cotai Bowling center at the Macau Sports Complex, was co-organized by the Macau Bowling Association. It was Paeng's third coaching seminar in the year 2013.

2011AUSMPaengNepomuceno_small.jpgUSBC International Bowling Ambassador and Gold Level coach Paeng Nepomuceno (pictured) held USBC International Level One and Bronze Level Seminars in Manila while Super Typhoon "Haiyan", the strongest typhoon in the world this year and possibly the most powerful ever to hit land smashed into the Philippines. The seminars ran from November 8-10 and the participants came from Bahrain, Malaysia, Vietnam and the Philippines. The seminar started on Friday, just hours after Haiyan made landfall.

USBC Coaching makes impact at WTBA World Championships

The global reach of the USBC Coaching Certification and Development department was on full display at the recent WTBA World Championships. The prestigious event, which took place Aug. 16-30 in Henderson, Nev., not only featured the sport of bowling's top players but also its top coaches. There were 24 active USBC certified coaches helping guide the world's best bowlers from 46 countries.

BWAA past president and life member John Jowdy passes away

PBA Hall of Famer and coaching pioneer was 93; led Bowling Writers Association of America in 1996

ImageProfessional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer and pioneer bowling coach John Jowdy (pictured) of El Cajon, Calif., died today of natural causes. He was 93. Jowdy was inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame in 1988 primarily for his coaching contributions but was also a prolific bowling writer and bowling industry advocate. He was president of the Bowling Writers Association of America in 1996 and was later voted a Life Member of the organization. Most recently he was inducted into the Bowling Coaches Hall of Fame in 2010.

Paeng Nepomuceno earns USBC Gold Coach status

2013USBCGoldCoachPaengNepomuceno_small.jpg Paeng Nepomuceno of the Philippines (pictured), one of most regarded international competitors and coaches in the world of bowling, recently earned Gold level coaching validation through USBC Coaching Certification and Development. USBC Gold is the highest certification for coaches, much like receiving a doctorate in a field of study. Paeng is one of 25 active coaches to currently hold the designation.

Jeri Edwards inducted into Bowling Coaches Hall of Fame during Bowl Expo

Former Team USA Head Coach becomes first female inductee; Billy Sixty and Sid Greenberg join Trailblazers

2013CoachesHoFJeriEdwards_small.jpg Jeri Edwards (pictured) was inducted into the Bowling Coaches Hall of Fame during International Bowl Expo in a ceremony Monday, June 24, at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. Edwards is the sixth inductee and the first woman to join the elite new Hall of Fame, which began in 2008. In addition to selecting one outstanding active coach each year, the Coaches Hall of Fame adds early pioneers who laid the foundation for modern coaches. Joining the list of Trailblazers this year are Billy Sixty and Sid Greenberg.

The Mastering the Mental Game seminar, which was held on Wednesday, May 1, at Paeng's Midtown Bowl in Metro Manila, Philippines, attracted USBC Bronze and Silver level coaches as well as a mix of veteran and youth bowlers. Due to the overwhelming response, Paeng has scheduled another seminar for Saturday, May 25, at the same venue.

Nepomuceno starts 2013 with USBC Silver Seminar in Manila, Philippines

20130116SilverSeminarManila_small.jpgUSBC coach, instructor and international ambassador Rafael "Paeng" Nepomuceno has conducted a USBC Silver Level Seminar in Manila, Philippines, January 14 to 16. The seminar was held at Paeng's Midtown Bowl with five Filipino coaches participating in the elite class. Nepomuceno is a living legend in his country after winning 124 career titles all over the world. It was the first USBC seminar held by USBC's busiest international coach in the year 2013.

Stephen Padilla earns USBC Gold-level coaching status

Padilla, 36, is a USBC Coaching Specialist at the International Bowling Campus in Arlington, and his primary responsibilities are organizing and conducting Silver certification classes.

Thanks to the Hong Kong Tenpin Bowling Congress who facilitated the link, the signing signifies the establishment of a long term partnership between the HKSI and the USBC in the exchange of high performance training, sports medicine and sports science research, testing and scientific data.

2012CoachesHoFGordonVadakin_small.jpgWichita State University (WSU) Head Bowling Coach Gordon Vadakin (pictured) has been chosen as the 2012 inductee into the Bowling Coaches Hall of Fame. Vadakin joins previous inductees Dick Ritger, Tom Kouros, John Jowdy, and Fred Borden in bowling's newest Hall of Fame. Only one coach is honored yearly among bowling's active coaches; but coaches from bowling's rich history who are deceased or retired are also recognized in the Trailblazers category. This year's Trailblazer inductees are Joe Wilman and LaVerne Carter.

USA Bowling Coaching to offer seminars on coaching youths

USBCCoachingLogo.jpgFor youth bowling coaches, volunteers or parents of children involved in the sport, USA Bowling will provide coaching seminars designed to teach basic bowling coaching skills. The USA Bowling Coaching program already has scheduled 52 seminars throughout the country this fall, and additional seminars will be added. The seminars are a continuation of the program started last year that drew more than 1,100 participants. The seminars are free, are three hours in length and include on-lane and classroom instruction.

2011KegelLogo_small.jpg The deletion of resurfacing requirement rule in 1964 created a huge asymmetric lane wear issue, which culminated with the PBA creating a lane maintenance division, and implementing their own lane surface policies for PBA Tour events. But today, with the large number of synthetic lanes, we have not only asymmetric wear issues, we found bowling lanes can also have severe asymmetric levelness issues. For Kegel and the LaneMapper project, our next challenge was to find a way to easily show the affects gravity had on a bowling ball on any one lane at any specific distance.

Paeng Nepomuceno concludes USBC coaching certification seminar in Indonesia

2011AUSMPaengNepomuceno_small.jpgInternational bowling ambassador Paeng Nepomuceno (pictured), Philippines, flew to Jakarta, Indonesia right after the Christmas holidays to hold a United States Bowling Congress Level One and Bronze Level certification seminar from December 26-28. The seminar, which was made possible thanks to the support of the National Olympic Committee of Indonesia (CONI), was organized by Hasrial Arimis, President of the Persatuan Bowling Indonesia DKI Jakarta Chapter.

The iCoach 2011 will take place at Kuortane High Performance Training Center, Finland on November 12-13 and will provide the latest information about coaching, sports science, psychology, coaching methodology and coaching tools.
